Changes at Stockholmsmässan

Published on 2025-09-30

During 2024–2025, the possibility of selling Stockholmsmässan to a commercial operator was explored. Extensive work was carried out, including dialogues with stakeholders.

Given the current market conditions — characterized by declining profitability across the industry — no potential buyer was identified who could ensure the long-term development considered necessary for the business. As a result, no acceptable offer was received, and the City of Stockholm decided to terminate the sales process, retain ownership of Stockholmsmässan, and focus on developing the company to strengthen its role as a key player in enhancing the region’s attractiveness as a destination for congresses and meetings.

The need for transformation is driven by Stockholmsmässan’s current financial situation. For several years, the company has experienced weak financial performance and reported significant deficits. The business has not recovered following the pandemic, which led to weakened market growth—particularly affecting consumer-oriented fairs and events. To address this, an organizational restructuring is required, and a notice of redundancy affecting 60 employees was issued on September 30, 2025.

Achieving financial balance by 2026 will also require process optimization, changes in working methods, and a digital transformation that enables sustainable economic development of the business.

Stockholmsmässan will continue to operate in its existing venue in Älvsjö at least until 2035.
